Chinese Beef Curry Recipe

This Chinese Beef Curry Recipe is both quick and delicious. It is very simple to make and you can try it for yourself.

Serve this dish with chips or rice and it will soon become one of your favourite go to dishes to impress your friends and family.

You can substitute the beef for other types of meat including chicken or lamb. You can also be creative with the vegetables.


  • Beef (I used sirloin steak as it tends to be less rubbery and more tender)
  • 1 Large Onion (Used as many or as little as you want)
  • Peas (optional)
  • Curry Paste/Curry Powder (different brands will have different measurements, use your own judgement here, you can’t really go wrong)
  • 3 Tablespoons of Soy Sauce
  • 2 Tablespoons of Sesame Oil
  • 1 Tin of Coconut Milk
  • 3 Cloves of Garlic finely diced)
  • Chillies for added spice (optional)
  • Small Knob of Ginger (optional)
  • 1 Tablespoon of Cornstarch/Cornflour (more for thickening if required)


  1. Tenderize the beef with a mallet
  2. Cut beef into small strips
  3. Marinade with soy sauce, garlic (don’t use all of it here), ginger, sesame oil and cornstarch (I tend to put some curry paste in to add some flavour too)
  4. Leave in the fridge until ready to cook (If you can, marinade the meat the day before for added flavour
  5. Prepare your vegetables, roughly cut the onions into big pieces (whatever your preference is here, I like big chunks of onion but you can cut them up smaller if you wish)
  6. Heat a wok over a medium heat with some oil (use coconut oil if you can as it can handle higher temperatures as well as given a very nice flavour)
  7. Add a little garlic and ginger and stir for 30 seconds
  8. Add the beef, turn up the heat and fry
  9. Add curry paste/powder
  10. Add water if it starts to look a bit dry/burnt
  11. Cook until the beef turns brown
  12. Add Onions and other vegetables/chillies
  13. Taste and determine if you need more curry paste (again, down to your own taste)
  14. Add the coconut milk (if it’s in a tin, be sure to shake it vigorously before opening)
  15. Simmer over a low/medium heat for 15 minutes
  16. If it is not thick enough, mix some cornflour with cold water and add gradually until it reaches the desired consistency
  17. Serve with rice or chips
